DEBATE LOOMS ON MUSIC SCHOOL REVAMP

The Nelson School of Music is hoping to follow the Theatre Royal with a redevelopment of its building – and is contemplating the city council taking over ownership.

But it is determined to remain independent and a council-controlled organisation such as now in place at the Suter Gallery is "not on the agenda".

"That's not what we want, and not what the council wants," trust board chairman Neil Deans said today.

The trust board is holding two public meetings in the next week to discuss the school's future and is hoping for a large turnout of the school's supporters, users and concertgoers.

The concept of community foundations started internationally over 100 years ago and there are now over 1400 worldwide. Through the strong support and generosity of The Tindall Foundation there are now more than a dozen community foundations throughout New Zealand. Their principles are to inspire generosity and encourage people to contribute to the betterment of their region and its people.

The Nelson Bays Community Foundation was born approximately 18 months ago by a group of like-minded people who share a great passion for the Nelson Bays region. Our philosophy is to prudently invest funds raised from donations, grants and legacies and distribute the earnings to charitable organisations as directed by our donors. Thus the Nelson Bays Community Foundation is a vehicle to enact the wishes of local people wanting to support the community on a perpetual basis.
